One of the things Britain needs like a hole in the head is more traffic, and yet this is exactly what these new towns will generate.A dozen new scattered communities means several dozen new A-roads and motorway spurs to service them. More people on the trains, more of everything, in fact.

If you spread people more thinly, logic dictates that they will need to travel more.

Driving out of eco town could prove costly PDF Print E-mail
PEOPLE living in the proposed Hanley Grange eco-town could be charged for driving out of it.

One of the main criticisms of the development has been that it will merely become a dormitory town, with most residents commuting by car to London, adding to road congestion and pollution.

Now the developers are working on ideas to deter commuting by car - one solution would be to use number plate recognition technology to enforce a form of congestion charge, with motorists penalised if they leave the town.
